Cranach the Elder for Gawain's eyes



From the RAU COLLECTION, now in Lisbon, this Judith (1525).
Cranach being a friend of Luther, recently at odds with the Pope and the Church (1517 ) this picture acquires an extra symbolic sense : the sword of virtue slaining the head of all evils.
